Invest in ELCD Project – Safeguard Ejagham for Generations
Across Ejagham nation, our population has grown significantly over the years. Yet, despite this increase, the number of people who speak the Ejagham language has sharply declined. While this trend may not be captured in formal statistics, it is evident in our lived experience: more people now live on Ejagham land, but fewer speak the language that defines our identity. Increasingly, foreign or neighbouring languages are replacing Ejagham in daily communication, deepening the urgency of cultural preservation.
This decline is not accidental; it is the product of multiple reinforcing factors. At its core lies the EDAME effect—Erosion, Dilution, Adulteration, Misinterpretation, and the gradual Extinction of Ejagham traditional practices and cultural expressions—compounded by our own collective inattention. As these traditions weaken, the language that embodies and transmits them weakens as well.

If we allow this trajectory to continue, we risk leaving behind only explanations and apologies, an insufficient consolation for future generations who will inherit the consequences of our inaction. A language lost is a heritage lost, and once gone, it cannot be reclaimed. The responsibility before us is therefore both urgent and historic: to safeguard the linguistic and cultural legacy that defines who we are and affirms where we come from.
However, there is a path forward.
By institutionalising the Ejagham language, developing it, standardising it, and integrating it into the curriculum of schools across Ejagham nation, we can reverse this decline. When children learn Ejagham in the classroom, the language becomes part of their daily lives. It becomes normal, accessible, and alive. This is how languages survive. This is how cultures endure.

The Ejagham Language Curriculum Development (ELCD) project is our most structured and realistic opportunity to safeguard and revitalise our language. If our children are not taught Ejagham in school, they will learn other languages, there will be no vacuum. The question is whether Ejagham will remain part of their identity or fade into oblivion.
We are at a defining moment. Your support can change the trajectory.
By donating to the ELCD project, you are investing directly in the survival and renewal of Ejagham identity. You are helping build a future where Ejagham children speak their language with pride, where our culture is preserved, and where our heritage thrives rather than disappears.
This is our moment to act. This is our opportunity to protect what is ours. Support the ELCD project. Give generously.
